April Wrap-up and Monotone Photoblogger Theme
April absolutely flew, I have no idea where it went.
Here’s what you rascals did last month, with a few new and improved stats:
- 240,494 blogs were created.
- 281,729 new users joined.
- 2,533,704 file uploads. (Y’all use the new uploader a lot more.)
- About 740 gigabytes of new files. (Estimated, better number next month.)
- 317 terabytes of content transferred from our datacenters. (Compare to last time we published transfer numbers.)
- 3,258,032 posts and 1,330,355 new pages.
- 4,903,485 logins.
- 655,178,604 pageviews on WordPress.com, and another 408,359,440 on self-hosted blogs. (1,063,538,044 pageviews total across blogs using our stats system. We broke a billion!!)
- 63,730,680 pageviews in RSS feeds.
- 884,208 active blogs, where “active” means they got a human visitor.
- 152,005,525 unique people visited WordPress.com-hosted blogs.
Random facts:
- About 30% of pageviews go to blogs with their own domains.
- 43% of pageviews to permalink pages.
- 30% of pageviews go to blogs in languages other than English. The most popular? Spanish, Portuguese, and Indonesian.
- 63% of our visitors were from outside of the United States.
- About 93% of pageviews were to people not logged in.
- People logged in somewhere using OpenID 84 thousand times.
- Blogs using the Digg3 theme got 5.26% of total traffic.
- There were 475 posts made via the Atom API (234,831 with XML-RPC).
- We sent 3,761,059 emails.
So many of our stats fall along 70/30 lines it’s scary.
Now for the juicy bits. Behold! Monotone.
Imagine a theme for photoblogging where every page looks like it was designed to match the picture. Monotone is a chameleon, it does sophisticated analysis of the image you upload to determine a complementary color scheme. The width of the page also changes based on the width of the photo.
You can see the demo site by clicking either of the images above.
Monotone takes the first (and only the first) image from your post and does its magic. Just make sure to select “full size” when you insert it. (The images must be uploaded to WordPress so we can resize them and extract out the colors properly. It also does best with BIG images.) The rest of the text is put below like a regular post. It only ever shows one post per page, but dig those archives.
A cool new theme, a new uploader, gigabytes of free space — you now have no good reason not to start a photoblog. Show the world what you’ve got. A week from today, if I remember, I’ll link to the coolest blogs using Monotone and will send literally dozens of viewers their way. Noel Jackson was the man behind the magic and we’re continuing to work with him on some top-secret projects.

As someone who enjoys taking hundreds of pictures AND blogging, I love the new theme. But like the others I also encountered a few bugs when the pictures did not load and the background color is black. But a few tweaks like resizing the photo fixed the problem. And the pictures can be anything I upload or an HTML code from my Flickr account.
Thanks WordPress and congrats on your excellent stats.

Excellent move….keep it up ! ! !
May 6th, 2008 at 6:59 am
It’s a great theme. With my 3GB space, I’ve decided to start a second blog. Is it possible that this theme links back to your primary blog? On the left, it says “By: Aphrael78″ … can you not make that a link?
Great work, thanks
May 6th, 2008 at 7:07 am
Haha! Finally I’ve got the most logical reason for buying that cost-me-a-fortune digicam. And hell yeah, I bought it before I know the theme it’s there. Some might say it’s coincidence, but hell I’d say it’s superstitious… Hahaha… just kidding.
Thank’s a bunch, Matt, and my warmest regards to your colleagues!

fantastic
May 6th, 2008 at 8:36 am
Hi Matt,
Really cool theme. Thats why I love WordPress.com.
May 6th, 2008 at 9:29 am
it’s an amazing theme; but its a pity there can’t be some landmark picture or randomised option, really. otherwise i would have switched to it permenantly.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Awesome!

Monotone is quite nice theme and it’s great to see that WordPress.com gets better and better. And yes, I started yet another blog because of you!

Very cool! I’m going to try it immediately. Great wordpress!
May 6th, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Not something I think I will use, but impressively innovative nonetheless. Great work — you’re really pushing the envelope.
May 6th, 2008 at 2:27 pm
That’s awesome! Congrats!
May 6th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
I’m a photographer and use wordpress for my photo business blog. I love the idea and theme of this layout but does that mean you can only post one image for each post? There’s times when I post 5+ pics from a client session. Does it have ability to click on the first image and change to the next images? Am I making sense?
May 6th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
Nice! I think that’ll be good enough for me, altough I hope you add soon “Comicpress” or a similar theme.
I wonder if will’be possible to have personalized Header and more space for Comic Strip (the best could be Kubrick but optimized for 1024×768 resolution, not for 800×600).
Bye!
May 6th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Amazingly cute; I love it!
May 6th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Funky, i always aspire that theme
May 6th, 2008 at 4:01 pm
fuhh.. fantastic
May 6th, 2008 at 7:54 pm
What a fun theme! Does anyone else find that viewing the archives is a bit tricky? It’s almost like you have to click on a certain place in the thumbnail to view the blog. Is anyone else having issues with this?
May 6th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
Great stuff… Congrats guys… Does this mean we have more photoblogging themes on the way?
May 6th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
i tried it and i’m keeping it. dogdailyphoto.wordpress.com
May 6th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
This is a beautiful theme and an excellent way to showcase photography.
That said, it would be great to have the option to chose the colour that appears at the left and right – the current white is far too stark and really competes with the visual of the blog. When I saw the screenshots I was expecting the sidebars to be grey as in the examples above – which works so much better.
A small bit of customization option in this vein would be great.
May 6th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
bagus bagus bagus, hehehe

سلام دوست عزیز، بسیار جالب بود، بندع نمیدانستم قالبی هم برای دوستان عکس بازمان وجود دارد.
May 7th, 2008 at 3:28 am
Very Cool, Matt. I’m gonna try using it.
May 7th, 2008 at 4:58 am
haha…I’ve painstakingly made my blog monotone with the neat! theme.
May 7th, 2008 at 5:56 am
Ooooh! I didn’t realize how much I wanted to start a photo blog until just this very minute! Thank you so much, WordPress.com!
May 7th, 2008 at 6:00 am
really cool idea, i love the whole chameleon concept. only thing is i’m a little sceptical about only having one photo for each post and having to dig the archives. Don’t get me wrong, good photos on a good layout’s worth the dig, but every click requires some loading time, and i’ll personally get tired after a few subsequent clicks-and-waits.
My question is, are we able to post photos within the text space itself? That way, the header photo could be more like a summary-theme-based image=)
thanks so much wordpress, noel!
May 7th, 2008 at 7:12 am
cool new themes!! i still like the one im on now though
May 7th, 2008 at 7:34 am
cool
May 7th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Great work!
I wonder if it would be possible to apply themes to pages instead of the whole blog. I am comfortable with my current theme, but would love to have monotone for my photography page.

May 7th, 2008 at 11:53 am
Awesome !!!
May 7th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
This would also be great for food/recipe and crafting blogs that also lean heavily on photography. I hope there’s the option to control colors, as well… I think I’d prefer a stark black background to white; it really makes colors pop!
May 7th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Actually I prefer the old uploader..it was way more user-friendly. The Monotone thing isn’t something I’ll use but it’s cool enough
May 7th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
Cool
May 7th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Wow, Indonesian was one of the most popular blogs? I can’t believe it.
Well, I think I’m a bit proud to be Indonesian, now.
May 7th, 2008 at 3:37 pm
This just hit me. You know what I’d like to see counted? The number of times per month that the “Next” button is used! I know it’s totally random but I’d like to see how many people are like me.
May 7th, 2008 at 4:48 pm
Waaw~ Monotone’s wayyy fascinating! Very inspired to take more photos
May 7th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
i like the new monotone format and also the fact that i now know what a “terabyte” is. Thanks!
May 7th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
As a photographer with two different blogs, my sister has started using the new theme and loves it. I know she probably likes it as well. Thanks for adding it. It makes viewing photos so much easier than previously.
May 8th, 2008 at 12:07 am
this is fantastic! WordPress is the best!
I have now a new photoblog to go with my main blog :
http://www.photographiemavie.wordpress.com
One thing would be great to add to this Monotone template, is a possibility to show a link or two (I would like people to be able to go to my text blog from my photoblog) Or be able to add pages (I tried and it doesn’t work) To put a favorite picture of the month… or something… I guess I should click on the feedback link for that right? hehe
Anyhow, what you have created there is just really cool!

A great idea, very innovative.
May 8th, 2008 at 1:53 am
Great Theme, Thanks. Just switched over to it and giving it a try. I an excited to be able to use larger images without the downside of other themes. Maybe one suggestion, preserve the category list to the blogs images in that category and leave the tags to wordpress tags. The other theme I was using had this and it worked great. Visitors could then select a category and browse the images in the blog related to that category. Helps show off the photographers a bit better.
Keep up the good work.
May 8th, 2008 at 3:15 am
Thank you so much for all the fabulous work that you do!
May 8th, 2008 at 3:16 am
I like the theme but I would very much hope that I can have multiple photos in my post and not just one. And that the theme will allow me to post video too.
May 8th, 2008 at 7:06 am

May 8th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Hey! Awesome! Checking it right away! Congrats by the way. Also, thanks for addressing us bloggers of wordpress as rascals. LOL, nice one. Goodbye!
May 8th, 2008 at 11:48 am
Monotone looks fantastic and works great from what I’ve seen. Congratulations and thanks for the continuing improvements
May 8th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
I’m in a silly mood today. Wouldn’t it be funny if the “possibly related posts” went back to some critique of bad albums due to the use of the word “monotone?”
In channelling the great Yogi Berra, I’d just like to say that 90% of my posts were 50% awesome.
May 8th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Right-o, then:

Off and running… Thanks again!

May 8th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
Finally a photoblog theme, hope this will not be the last one!!!
May 8th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Could we have the map widget as one of the page templates then? So we could put one into the about page (the default and only one in this theme) to keep track.
anyway, a great template nevertheless, I certainly will think about using it. keep up the good work.
May 9th, 2008 at 12:36 am
congratulatios
Those numbers reflect the good work you’ve been doing
May 9th, 2008 at 7:20 am
Looks really cool!
I like the new designs for the photo blog. I’ll have to start doing this soon. If onlt there were more hours in the day…
Thanks for all the hard work.
Sincerely
May 9th, 2008 at 8:18 am
Fantastic! Very interesting for me!
May 9th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
30% of pageviews go to blogs in languages other than English. The most popular? Spanish, Portuguese, and INDONESIAN.
are you sure, matt?! hei… i’m indonesian…!!!
May 9th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Looks great – am considering swapping but I like the side bars…
May 9th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
I like this idea. But is it possible that this theme had black background? And where the blogroll goes in this theme…
May 9th, 2008 at 8:00 pm
Fantastic theme… Because of this, I started my blog here (as it’s a bit difficult to get the same benefit on a self installed WordPress)!
I think there’s a slight issue as the photo doesn’t seem to be showing up on the static pages (“About” section).
But thank you anyway!!
May 9th, 2008 at 8:56 pm
Whoa! That looks awesome!
May 9th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
hi, matt
congratulations for the wordpress, it is the best blog cms!!!
I would like if the categories and tags links of all themes target to the blogs categories and tags, no to the wordpress.com general blogs.
A example?
the tag video in my blog target to http://pt-br.wordpress.com/tag/video/ , but I wish this target to http://wille.wordpress.com/category/video/
thanks,
May 9th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Indonesian. YAY!! The new theme is awesome
it makes me want to start a photoblog.
May 10th, 2008 at 3:52 am
I love Monotone, and have only had it for a few hours! http://swdesertgardening.wordpress.com/
Thank you!
May 10th, 2008 at 1:12 pm
That is fantastic!!!!
May 10th, 2008 at 7:15 pm
I’m loving the Monotone theme–thanks so much for such a creative template! As an earlier “rascal” posted, I would LOVE to see the background as black instead of white. It would really make the colors stand out.
May 10th, 2008 at 8:48 pm
Wow – this is cool.
