September Wrap-Up
This month we grew not just in blogs and users, but in company size. As I mentioned in a previous post, the team from Intense Debate is now a part of Automattic. We’re also trucking along with Version 2.7, and listening to your input from the two design surveys opened up this month.
Here are the stats:
- 334,004 blogs were created.
- 335,693 new users joined.
- 3,753,063 file uploads.
- 1766.49 gigabytes of new files.
- 489 terabytes of content transferred from our datacenters.
- 6,252,336 logins.
- 952,281,311 pageviews on WordPress.com, and another 694,985,128 on self-hosted blogs (1,647,266,439 total across all WordPress blogs we track — a jump of 191,084,227 views since last month).
- 1,317,190 active blogs and 15,433,379 active posts where “active” means they got a human visitor.
- 1,176,044,534 words.
Other interesting stuff:
We welcomed new WordPress VIPs, including The NFL.
Martha Stewart converted to WordPress and devoted an entire episode of The Martha Stewart Show to blogging.
The UK Royal Navy uses WordPress and is the first of the UK’s Armed Services to have a blog.
We had a record-breaking number of WordCamps this month, with fantastic turnouts:
- WordCamp Phillipines: 65 attendees in Davao; 400+ in Manila.
- WordCamp China: 400 attendees in Beijing; around 140 in Shanghai.
- WordCamp Tokyo: 100 attendees.
- WordCamp Portland: 150 attendees.
- WordCamp Utah: 140 attendees.
- WordCamp Vancouver: 80 attendees.
- WordCamp Birmingham: 80 attendees.
Phew!

Interesting statistics. How is WordPress keeping up on the increased storage? Sounds like there’s quite a bit to store each month alone.

Hope things can always become better here in WordPress and not like Yahoo, which is out of control when the place started to grow, those good things become bad THEN it is disappointing…Really not sure the new version is good or not, hope not like Facebook too, which is disaster

I have loved being a blogger for more than two years. I am grateful for your easy format and the ability to blog effortlessly. Thanks Word Press. Linda
October 13th, 2008 at 8:35 am
The ability to pin posts to the front page is something I HUGELY appreciate for a blog like mine that’s primarily informational and not so much ‘here’s what I ate today’. This makes me super happy I chose WordPress last year, (even when this feature wasn’t there).
The only thing I feel I’m missing now (I have to simulate it by discipline) is a database feature – I’m blogging
new anime as they arrive, and there’s no way to create just a simple ‘list of x’, so I’m just simulating it per season by just adding lists and links.
Honestly, it’s a huge amount of work (I understand this, I’m a professional programmer), but if you could support simulating the simplest forms of flat file database it would be amazing.

October 16th, 2008 at 3:10 pm
I know I appreciate being able to use WordPress for my website. It’s much better then Freewebs and more secure.
I’d like to make a suggestion however (coming from a programmer that works with users everyday). Having YouTube or your own special tutorial videos on how to work with WordPress would be a great deal of help and user friendly.
Thanks again and Congrats on doing so well!
October 16th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
@Coonsey: We have some great video tutorials in the FAQ, and lots more to come. Keep an eye out for updates
October 17th, 2008 at 1:25 am
@O’Maolchathaigh: Rest assured, scalability has been and will continue to be a top priority. We are constantly changing and growing to accommodate our users. The response times discussed in the 24/7 Support post are still in effect.
