Like a Post? Well Then, “Like” It!
Starting today you’ll notice a new feature at the bottom of all WordPress.com blog posts. We’ve enabled a “Like” button, which, when clicked, shows a Gravatar image for all the bloggers who like a post.
When you “like” a post two core things happen. First, the blog post’s author sees your “like” and can click-through to your Gravatar profile. Second, clicking “like” saves the post in your homepage dashboard (in the “Posts I Like” section), so you can share it with others, or just keep it around for future reference. If you’re interested in keeping track of how many likes your own blog posts are receiving, there’s a new “like count” column on the “Posts > Edit Post” screen. This will show you the total like count on each of your posts, right next to the total comment count.
We’re hoping this will be an awesome new way to discover other interesting bloggers, and start new conversations with people who — literally! — like you. If you haven’t updated your Gravatar profile yet, now would be a great time to upload a picture, a link to your blog, and any other details. Editing your profile is easy, just remember that all of your profile information is public.
If you’d prefer not to display likes on any of your blog posts we’ve provided an option to turn them off under “Appearance > Extras.” You can still enable or disable likes selectively on individual posts through the “Show likes on this post” checkbox when editing or writing a new post.
To help you get fully up to speed, check out the new support document on the likes system.
Update:
To turn off the Like button you will now need to go into Settings > Sharing. You can read more about this move here.

Nice job guys! And I can’t wait to see more new features!!!
August 4th, 2010 at 11:14 am
I love that idea…sometimes people just want the click of a button! Thanks for sharing.

August 4th, 2010 at 11:41 am
I really like this like it
August 4th, 2010 at 11:46 am
Figata..
August 4th, 2010 at 11:59 am
I’m sorry but I don’t really understand it. It’s good, that there’s a way to save the posts I like. But for me it’s also very interesting, how many people liked my posts. And … by the way … I’m not visiting the wordpress.com-site very often. Therefore it would be great to get the Likes into the WP-Admin-Window. Like “Articles”, “Links” or “Sites”, there should be “Likes”. A place, very I can see, what I’ve liked, and what other people liked at my blog.
But the idea itself, the Like-Button, is great. I’m looking forward to the time, wenn non-bloggers are able to like it too.
August 4th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
You can see all the posts you have liked in the “Posts I Like” tab on the WordPress.com homepage. To see how many likes all of your blog posts have then go to the edit posts screen in your blog, the like counts are next to the comment counts.
August 4th, 2010 at 12:36 pm
I like the feature (although I wish there were a different word for “like”–thanks to FB overkill). Convenient to be able to have a list of posts I enjoyed without having to try to remember what they were or lose them forever.
August 4th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
It’s good to have this. But one suggestion. It’ll be more useful if ‘like’ button is placed right next to the heading of the post. Because, When posts are split with ‘more’ feature, visitor cannot see the button. Those who know about the wordpress’ like button will only click ‘read the rest of the entry’ link to press the button. But some, who really likes the post by reading up to what they see on page, may not have enough patience to click ‘more’ link so as to press the button. Think about it.
…with thanks.
August 4th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
Yes, a friend is desperately trying to find the “star” right now. It would be really nice if non-Wordpressers people could be allowed to at least see the star. She says the star must be invisible, but she sees people’s faces and want hers there, too! I LOVE the idea that the star is there. Kind of nice to see which blogs have received the most feedback, and I like the placement. I just wish it wasn’t only open to people on WordPress, as many of my subscribers of from Blogger or just plain independents who find me through Facebook.
August 4th, 2010 at 1:05 pm
this sounds like a geat idea, thanks alot!
August 4th, 2010 at 1:07 pm
Thanks.
August 4th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Cool! I ‘like’ this post!
August 4th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

August 4th, 2010 at 2:07 pm
I love this idea! Thanks.
August 4th, 2010 at 2:34 pm
Me likey!
August 4th, 2010 at 3:28 pm
Personally I’m not thrilled about the continual dumbing down of online discourse to “like” and “unlike” buttons … before you know it, there will be a whole array of buttons for a variety of programmed responses, and no one will be saying anything of any real value.
Get beyond “liking” something and let the blogger know how you really feel.
August 4th, 2010 at 3:41 pm
Nice article, Thanx
August 4th, 2010 at 3:53 pm
i like this! nice one.
August 4th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
Thank you for having fixed the position of the button in the Tarski theme.
Concerning this feature I am not sure how often I will use it.
August 4th, 2010 at 4:57 pm
Hum…happy to see this feature…will prove helpful in discovering new and interesting stuff people post…but would have been great if WP were to innovate some thing themselves instead of simply following FB concept…
August 4th, 2010 at 5:03 pm
Good Idea.
August 4th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
a truly nifty idea, thanks blokes
August 4th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
It took me a while to figure it out. Now, I have to go and “like” some posts.
August 4th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
You guys really need to make a Facebook like button.
August 4th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Nice feature – but – the only way to reveal the “like” button is to open the comments. The button should be available whether comments are open or not. Just my opinion… – Jeff
August 4th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
The like button should always be visible and it’s most likely the theme you are using that is hiding the button. Could you test another theme and see if that fixes it? Thanks.
August 4th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
Is there option to choose for its placement? ie. “in front of page/post” instead of “above comment” this way people don’t have to click the post to see the gravatar.
August 4th, 2010 at 8:39 pm
Not at the moment no.
August 4th, 2010 at 7:36 pm
Nice! I’ve been waiting for something like this.
August 4th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
I may or may not use this because, like the ratings option, it gets depressing when few people reply, and it shows other readers how relatively unpopular you are.
I have several years’ worth of posts. Is there any way to see a list of just those posts that have been “liked,” rather than scrolling through ALL your posts looking for those with numbers in the “Likes” column (since the column headers don’t sort)? In other words, is there a “Likes” report function for the blog administrator?
August 4th, 2010 at 8:40 pm
There isn’t right now, but that’s something we’ll look into adding.
August 4th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
Great
Thanks!!
August 4th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
this is a great idea!!!!!!!!1
August 4th, 2010 at 8:08 pm
Nice feature! Thanks.
August 4th, 2010 at 8:54 pm
cool, when will we have “follow this blog” button like blogspot.com has?
August 5th, 2010 at 7:03 am
We’re looking into options like this.
August 4th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

August 4th, 2010 at 10:23 pm
Very Cool, and what about FB ? :-/
August 4th, 2010 at 11:45 pm
Hi. Nice one! thanks!
August 4th, 2010 at 11:49 pm
Thanks, but… Can you possibly tinker this so we could have the CHOICE of using the like facility to show only the number of likes? I would rather not have the visual junk of all those gravatars (yes, I’m being wildly optimistic I’ll get some of these things).
August 5th, 2010 at 12:54 am
WOOT WOOT!!!! Wonderful idea!!!!
August 5th, 2010 at 1:02 am
WordPress is getting better and better!
August 5th, 2010 at 1:17 am

August 5th, 2010 at 1:46 am
VERY cool!
August 5th, 2010 at 2:21 am
i really like the like button, and love the re-blog feature attached to it. But i’ve been having problems lately with the like button not working. I will click it. nothing happens. i will close the tabe, and then open it again in a new tabe, and the like sticks.
August 5th, 2010 at 7:00 am
Could you contact support and explain the problem in detail please?
August 5th, 2010 at 2:47 am
JOY. This sounds like a cool feature
August 5th, 2010 at 3:23 am
I like it and I have it.

August 5th, 2010 at 6:58 am
In your blog dashboard click on the top level “Posts” menu. You should see a list of your posts and the number of likes in the second to last column.
August 5th, 2010 at 3:54 am
love it
August 5th, 2010 at 4:04 am

August 5th, 2010 at 4:51 am

and i would like to request for a RETWEET button too..hope it can be considered. thanks!
August 5th, 2010 at 5:42 am
nice ….
August 5th, 2010 at 6:07 am
Wonderful …yery cool
August 5th, 2010 at 6:19 am
Liking the like button.. In fact I am loving it.
August 5th, 2010 at 7:19 am
Yay! Like this! ^__^
August 5th, 2010 at 7:37 am
Cool new feature.
But the like button should also appear in the blog under each post, not just single posts! Because some are so short that don’t need the user to open them in a separate post page!
August 5th, 2010 at 7:44 am
This is very ‘like’able as sometimes we only want to say “I like”, although there’s nothing which could totally replace a valued comment.
August 5th, 2010 at 8:01 am
So cute! Just like facebook!
August 5th, 2010 at 9:50 am
I like the “LIKE”
August 5th, 2010 at 9:55 am
Do I miss something or is it has to be right that ? I just see the “Like” button while I’m log-in into my account. When I’m logging out, I can’t find the button anywhere
August 5th, 2010 at 5:36 pm
The like button is for logged in WordPress.com users only.
August 17th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
The “Like” button is for sharing posts among WordPress.com users. It will be visible only when you’re logged in
August 5th, 2010 at 10:27 am
super idea!!!
August 5th, 2010 at 11:46 am
I like it. I’m new at this and appreciate any help I can get. My blog, http://www.ypalmcoastnow.wordpress.com, is about personal experience in and aroound Palm Coast, Florida.
hugs
August 5th, 2010 at 11:49 am
I just added it to my site. I am liking wordpress.com more and more each day!
August 5th, 2010 at 12:41 pm
My excitement waned when I saw it was only available when people are reading individual posts, not at the main site address and that they have to be logged into WordPress. It’s a step in the right direction, but I’m hoping these things can be addressed.
August 5th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
We’ll continue to tweak and improve it as time goes on.
August 5th, 2010 at 1:05 pm
Great feature. I often don’t have enough of a sentiment to make a meaningful comment. (I didn’t even know about the thumbs up thing others are referring to.) I just wish this was offered on the homepage, not only if you open a specific post.
Either way, it’s a LIKE for me!
August 5th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
How about “Liking” Pages? Hey, don’t short shift Pages! I put a lot of good stuff in my pages and they shouldn’t be overlooked – they need quick comments, too. Just sayin’
August 5th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Thank God, I’m able to turn the “like” function off.
August 5th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
Nice addition. Thank you
August 5th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
unfortunately only for logged in users only
August 5th, 2010 at 3:29 pm
great idea thanks a ton
August 5th, 2010 at 4:07 pm
Love it, Like it, Thank you!
August 5th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
Wow! I like the “LIKE” button…keep it up….
August 5th, 2010 at 4:50 pm

August 5th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

August 5th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
