More ways to share
Starting today there is a new way for your readers to share the posts on your blog with friends. This feature allows you to add sharing functionality from a range of services to the bottom of your blog posts.
![]()
Here’s a quick video introduction:
To begin with we have the following services for you to choose from. If there is a service missing from the list, don’t worry! You can add your own custom services as well.
- Press This
- Digg
- StumbleUpon
- Email to a friend
You can control these new options in your dashboard by going to Settings > Sharing.
You can choose which of these services you want to display and in a range of different formats. If you have the custom CSS upgrade you can go even further and choose your own icons and layout. We have also added stats for all activity around this feature so you will be able to see what content people are sharing and on what services. Check out the sharing support article for more information on getting setup. Note: We will also be releasing this as a WordPress.org plugin next week.
Update: This is now available as a WordPress.org Plugin called Sharedaddy.

Seriously maybe WP should take it easy for a while…all this cool innovation-wordpress could easily become a religion.
August 24th, 2010 at 6:37 pm
Just yesterday, when attempting to configure the “new” Digg into my blog, I thought I’d failed.
Today — prior to reading this notice — I assumed I did better than anticipated when seeing all those new icons at the bottom of my posts. Ha!
August 24th, 2010 at 6:46 pm
Simply the BEST!!!
August 24th, 2010 at 6:47 pm
Thanks so much, this is what I needed!

Thanks guys! Awesome…
August 25th, 2010 at 7:06 am

August 24th, 2010 at 7:40 pm
hello there,
i was using getsocial for this. now it will be better but share options are only visible when someone clicks on the blog post.
is it possible to have them visible on the main blog page?
August 25th, 2010 at 7:53 am
Yes, you need to change your settings: http://support.wordpress.com/sharing/
August 24th, 2010 at 7:42 pm
Great!
August 24th, 2010 at 7:59 pm

Love this! Been waiting a long time, but it’s been worth the wait
August 24th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Yahoo! Nice job – I was waiting for this. I’ve always been a big wordpress fan, but this time you really outdid yourselves!
Oh – passed 500, 000 page views this week. Thanks wordpress!
August 24th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
Wow! I have to check this out!
August 24th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
This is very helpful
August 24th, 2010 at 8:16 pm
Having added this to my blog I am struck by how this excellent feature could be even more visible. I see others have asked for it to be added to the top of a post. This is indeed better than the bottom IMHO, but was wondering if it could also be made as a widget that could be added to a theme. OK I know. I’m greedy
August 24th, 2010 at 8:22 pm
Great work! Thanks for continuing to roll out new features.
August 24th, 2010 at 8:25 pm
Finally an easy way to let readers share my posts. I love it. Good Show.
August 24th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
Good news! wordpress is upgrading features soo fast!
August 24th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
I like the feature very much, but I have one small problem : When I select : Show sharing buttons on > Posts only , it also shows the sharing buttons on my other pages. And I don’t want that. What can I do?
P.S. : Keep up the good work
August 25th, 2010 at 9:26 am
You can disable it using the checkbox at the bottom of the post edit page
August 24th, 2010 at 8:30 pm
Awesome new feature. Thanks!
August 24th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
Great improvement. It would be nice to have the opportunity to switch it off on special sites. I would like to have it on the index and post sites, but I don’t want it on pages like the contact page.
Cheers!
August 25th, 2010 at 9:25 am
You can use the disable like and sharing checkbox at the bottom of the post edit page to disable it.
August 24th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
Thanks for this hugely helpful info! Used it to make changes to our blogs. Really appreciate it.
August 24th, 2010 at 8:36 pm
Fantastic! I’m blown over by the constant stream of WordPress.com improvements – and WordPress.com was already hot!
August 24th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
OMG! finally! the easiest way to add Facebook share! thanks a lot! good job. good job.
August 24th, 2010 at 8:46 pm
Very Nice, as a new WP user I was struggling trying to make sense of my SM tabs and making them mesh. This helps
August 24th, 2010 at 8:53 pm
Uh, is it already chrismas or somethin?
August 24th, 2010 at 9:02 pm
Thank you wordpress. This is a great feature much needed
August 24th, 2010 at 9:11 pm
This is great for the less software savvy folks like me! Thanks so much!
August 24th, 2010 at 9:15 pm
Excellent! Things are really heating up here in the promotional tools department.
August 24th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
Much appreciated! Cheers
August 24th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Pretty soon we will type something from our bedroom and it will be resounding around the world in every social media network possible!
August 24th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
You made my life easy. I was trying so long to add these buttons manualy, but with no success. Thanks a lot.
August 24th, 2010 at 9:50 pm
Thank you! I’ve been trying to figure out how to allow people to Print direclty from my Blog.
August 24th, 2010 at 9:55 pm

Another great added feature. WordPress, thank you so much for making this site better and better!
August 24th, 2010 at 9:57 pm
This is fabulous! Now I can recommend wordpress.com to everyone. This was the missing link. Thank you.
August 24th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
At the risk of saying what others have been saying: YES, YES!!!!! HAHAHAHA!!
I noticed it by accident today!
August 24th, 2010 at 10:02 pm
Awesome! Thank you WordPress team.
Cheers!
August 24th, 2010 at 10:05 pm
Another lovely and fantastic feature from wordpress. As USUAL.
August 24th, 2010 at 10:06 pm
I think this is great, but I’d appreciate it if you added Google Buzz as well, as I use that a lot.
August 24th, 2010 at 10:09 pm
This is exactly what I was hoping for. I’m really excited about this new feature.
August 24th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
I really am delighted by this. Many thanks.
3 negatives
1. I will have to go through all my old posts and get rid of GETSOCIAL icons
oh well a price worth paying!!!
&
2. You’ve finally got included one of those must have features that really had to be there. The only one missing now is auto feeding a facebook fan page rather than a personal page. ALMOST THERE. Can’t wait … I know you are waiting on it of course (dates? year?)
&
3. Stylistically the icons seem a little big. As a way around I guess you could recreate a new service with a new icon OR is there any way of simplifying the look and feel by adding a single icon & its associated functionality like with sharethis or addthis ?
and as a PS my CSS modded connections theme seems to work well with the new feature.
thank you again
delighted of london
August 25th, 2010 at 6:53 am
You can disable smart buttons and just show an icon if you think they are too big.
August 24th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
Wow, you guys are AMAZING! It’s mind blowing how talented (and uber-tech-savvy) you all are! I love this feature.
Question: Who is the guy with the great British accent who records the tutorial videos for Webpress? He’s great!
Do you have a name? His site address?
Thanks so much in advance!
August 25th, 2010 at 7:51 am
That would be Michael Pick, who can be found on the Automattic about page.
August 24th, 2010 at 10:32 pm
Wow another great feature from my favorite people! ^_^
August 24th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
Outstanding! Have wanted something like this for a long time. Thx guys!
August 24th, 2010 at 10:57 pm
Guys, the print option is great and it is something I been waiting for. But the print option provided (without additional options) is not print option that I was looking for. The current print option not only prints the blog post but also prints the sidebar! And this waste page and space. I can do the same using the browser print option – so what’s the big different with the print option from WordPress?
So what I am looking for from WordPress is something else. I prefer the option to print the post (or page) in a “printable format” which excludes the side bar, comments, possibly related posts field. Just focus on the content itself and option to add tags and categories. That would be better. Thanks alot
August 26th, 2010 at 7:40 am
The result varies from theme to theme, and we will look into better ways of ensuring a consistent output.
August 24th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
Am I stupid? I dont have a “share” in my settings menu. I am running wP 3.0.1
August 25th, 2010 at 6:14 am
It is only available on WordPress.COM – a plugin for WordPress.ORG has not been released yet.
August 24th, 2010 at 11:05 pm
I love this feature but I’m a bit confused. I went to Settings and Sharing, did exactly as the video said. I can see the icons on post previews but they don’t appear once the draft has been posted. What am I doing wrong?
August 25th, 2010 at 6:52 am
You have them set to appear on your posts only, which they do. If you want them on index pages also then you’ll need to change the settings: http://support.wordpress.com/sharing/
August 24th, 2010 at 11:12 pm
Hmm, I’ve enabled the buttons but they aren’t showing on my blog unless I go to the comments page. Readers who want to share but not comment will not see them.
A comment above suggests that my Firefox Adblock may be hiding them, but even when I log out of WP at check the blog with IE, I’m not see them on the front page.
August 25th, 2010 at 6:50 am
They seem to be showing fine for me on your blog. Please contact support if you still have a problem.
August 24th, 2010 at 11:19 pm
This was the thing which originally made me go self-hosted years ago… been missing it since I came back. Really, really amazing, well done!
I think it’d make sense to integrate the wordpress ‘like’ system into this, so it can go with the others.
August 24th, 2010 at 11:23 pm
as an online paid freelance writer, this will make my life a lot simpler! THANKS.
August 25th, 2010 at 12:03 am
This is what we were waiting for….excellent stuff! But, could you add in more services like Buzz, option to have both Facebook like and share etc. It still looks a bit cumbersome to add new services for an average user.
August 25th, 2010 at 1:01 am
Wowwww… !!!! its very.. veryyy.. nice and the besttt !!!! i’m super like it !!!
August 25th, 2010 at 1:10 am
Great! but stil no del.ico.us button.. perhaps next you could add it..
thanks.. good job, team!..
August 25th, 2010 at 6:11 am
You can add your own service if the one you want is not there – http://support.wordpress.com/sharing/
August 25th, 2010 at 1:10 am
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
August 25th, 2010 at 1:28 am
One word….wait, two words: THANK YOU!
August 25th, 2010 at 1:33 am
Thanks, I’ve been waiting for this.
August 25th, 2010 at 1:42 am
This is really amazing!! Great job!!
August 25th, 2010 at 2:05 am
gosh finally what i’ve been waiting for!!!
August 25th, 2010 at 2:22 am
Question: Any chance we can get a little greedy and have BOTH the Facebook SHARE button AND the Facebook LIKE button at the same time? Please? I’m beggin’…
August 25th, 2010 at 11:11 am
We’ll look into this for the future
August 25th, 2010 at 2:32 am
Totally cool… You Guys absolutely ROCK!!!! Thank you
August 25th, 2010 at 2:47 am
Awesome! Just one REQUEST: Add a Facebook LIKE button! Thank you!
August 25th, 2010 at 6:09 am
There’s already one these – check out the support doc!
August 25th, 2010 at 3:05 am
FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY!
I was getting really sick of adding the Share This buttons to each and every post manually! Thank you so much! This is awesome!
August 25th, 2010 at 3:10 am
Is there a way to analyze what our readers used to share one of our posts? facebook, twitter, etc… how many times have users clicked on Facebook? etc…
August 25th, 2010 at 6:10 am
Yes, see your blog stats. Unfortunately we currently can not record smart buttons.
August 25th, 2010 at 3:26 am
Absolutely loved it, great feature thanks a lot for sharing it.
Aniket
August 25th, 2010 at 3:43 am
Great! I can’t remember how often I’ve tried to add a “StumbleUpon” and a “Digg” badge to my page, trying different scripts and HTML-versions of each hoping to circumvent the WordPress script blocker… all in vain. And now its finally here as a feature and only takes 5 clicks to add. Thanks!
August 25th, 2010 at 3:48 am
I like this new Display !
thanks alot ! how I can add more Share Site ?
August 25th, 2010 at 3:55 am
Awesome. Badly Needed. Until now, I was doing it so so mechanically by first editing the HTML and copy-pasting some links. Now that we have it automatically added as a feature, I am so so relaxed. Blogging is becoming easier, happier on wordpress. Best.
August 25th, 2010 at 4:19 am
I love this new feature! My posts are spreading faster already. Not even 12 hours have passed and I already see results.
August 25th, 2010 at 4:26 am
Awesome. This is Great. Thanks.
August 25th, 2010 at 4:38 am
Excellent! Thank you!
August 25th, 2010 at 4:39 am
this service does not synchronize with the old existing stats in the blog. Like the digg counts does not match which were done with the digg button shortcode, the tweetmeme button tweet count does not match the existing post. So this is a problem. Probably something can be done
August 25th, 2010 at 12:22 pm
Can you contact support with details of where you are seeing this? We’ll look into it for you.
August 25th, 2010 at 4:51 am
Just excellent !!! Thank you so much !!!
August 25th, 2010 at 4:51 am
Great step! Thanks!
August 25th, 2010 at 4:54 am
Awesome! Just what I needed right now to spread the word
August 25th, 2010 at 5:21 am
Thanks a lots now i can be able to share my views to others…once again, thank you so much….
August 25th, 2010 at 5:28 am
Long awaited….Thanks a lot…
August 25th, 2010 at 5:36 am
Yes ,we need this. Thanks !
August 25th, 2010 at 6:08 am
Thank you. This is just what I had been waiting for.
August 25th, 2010 at 7:32 am
No Myspace?
It’s in the top 20+ in the world according to Alexa and every musician has a page to sell their music.
August 25th, 2010 at 7:45 am
Unbelievable! Finally for this one! Yey!
August 25th, 2010 at 7:56 am
In my wp admin there is no sharing link in the settings drop down or anywhere else. Seems it’s appearing for everyone else. Im using the latest version. Any ideas? Should I be installing something? Help please.
August 25th, 2010 at 7:59 am
This feature is for WordPress.COM only, a WordPress.ORG plugin will be released shortly.
August 25th, 2010 at 8:10 am
Finally! This saves so much time and trouble. Now I don’t have to use Get Social and copy paste a whole string of code after each post.
I do have to go edit all my older posts though to take the old social media links out.
August 25th, 2010 at 8:17 am
First: THANK YOU! This is awesome.
Second: As long as we’re troubleshooting, it’s a minor detail, but in the “+ share” flyout menu, my columns are a bit too narrow. Some fairly short words are being pushed to two lines. (I use the Vigilance Theme, if that matters.) That’s my only complaint.
Third: Thank you, again.
August 25th, 2010 at 10:25 am
We’ll look into that theme issue.
August 25th, 2010 at 8:20 am
Finally! Thanks for this one!
August 25th, 2010 at 8:24 am
This is one of the best features to be added since I started here on WordPress.com a couple of years ago. Thank you!
