Make it Snow Around the World
The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?
J. B. Priestley
December 1st makes a lot of us think of the holidays. It’s hard not to think about snow even if your climate doesn’t bring it. Once again, we’d like to spread snow around the world through WordPress.com.
To make it snow on your site:
- Go to your site’s dashboard.
- Navigate to Appearance → Extras.
- Check the box next to “Show falling snow on this blog.”
- Click the Update Extras button.
If you used snow last year it is automatically turned back on. If you want to turn it off, follow the steps above but uncheck the box.
Here’s a latin jazz version of Let it Snow to listen to while activating the feature:
Older computers may run slow or stop responding due to snow. Use the following links if you run into a problem (the options below only affect your user account):

December 2nd, 2010 at 3:24 am
Thank you very much Nick!! I love it!!!!
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:48 am
Yet another amazing feature!! Thanks soooooooo much! Just love it!!
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:48 am
“You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different” (Priestley).
Of course, the first fall of snow could happen during the day time.
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:49 am
Woo Hoo! Thanks for snow in Australia in summer. Very nice.
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:52 am
Yes! The annual tradition!
December 2nd, 2010 at 4:00 am
I just started blogging this week….hope I can figure this “snow” thing out! Thanks for all you do to allow a stay at home mom like me to have so much fun “joining in the conversation”…
December 2nd, 2010 at 4:46 am
Love the snow and the jazz is cool too.
December 2nd, 2010 at 4:49 am
I love it! So kitschtastic! I’ve only experienced one snowy Christmas ( it’s usually hot in Melbourne, Australia in December), and look forward to my blog becoming a snowdome each year. Thanks!
December 2nd, 2010 at 4:55 am
Cool, just in time for the fantasy football playoffs! Makes it feel like we are at Soldier or Lambeau Fields.
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:03 am
Yes! Snow! Only…I have a white background… NOOOoooooo!!! If I change the theme, my sidebar will be messed up, I can’t get custom CSS, and I don’t want to mess around with theme changes when I found something so elegantly perfect for me! DX No snow for me…
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:13 am
I also activated the snow feature last year and I’m glad that I can use it again. Thank you.
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:16 am
Snow just started this week in Amsterdam…what great timing for this feature!
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:25 am
I just spent the last hour and a half shoveling snow.
And yet, I’m glad to see it back on WP because it adds that extra special little touch. Thank you.
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:26 am
OMG!!! TYTYTY!
This is the best thing yet WP did for me
And just perfect timing too for my christmas lights post!
December 2nd, 2010 at 6:02 am
Wonderful idea on time. Great going taking all members together with this novel feature !!!
Thanks a lot.
December 2nd, 2010 at 6:35 am
I am a new WP user and I have to say that I am simply blown away by all these gorgeous features. I should have come to WP much earlier if I had bothered to do my homework before using some of the other blog platforms.
It hasn’t started snowing here just yet, but I can’t wait. Love this feature. Keep them coming. WordPress RULES.
December 2nd, 2010 at 6:45 am
Awww, thank you for this! Does this mean I have permission to crack out the sherry now? ;o)
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:53 pm
Only if there’s enough to share!
December 2nd, 2010 at 6:46 am
So bad it doesn’t snow here in Brazil.. :/
December 2nd, 2010 at 7:20 am
It doesn’t snow where I am and thus, a great idea to get the joy of white christmas.
Thanks.
December 2nd, 2010 at 7:21 am
Wow, I like it.
Thanks for adding this snow effect.
December 2nd, 2010 at 7:32 am
Excellent feature! And an innovative one, I must say; I have never seen anything like it!
December 2nd, 2010 at 7:40 am
Amazing, We don’t have snow in Tropical Africa but this feature really makes it feel like its been snowing for centuries in the tropics. A big ups to the Developers at WordPress. I think I will add the Jazz Music feature too.
And by the way Lessing mentioned having this all year round, I think it would be cool having a similar feature of every season say Sparkling Sun Rays on the Page for the SUMMER and Falling leaves for the fall. Would really be great! Perhaps another feature to automatically adjust Backgrounds images to suit the ‘Falling things’
Woo ooo! I love WP
December 2nd, 2010 at 7:53 am
What a cute feature…especially if you live in the Northern hemisphere.
December 2nd, 2010 at 7:58 am
Thank you so much, I love it – every year ! 8)
December 2nd, 2010 at 8:24 am
It’s great – but why oh why does it stop on January 4th? The major western festival (the 12 days of Christmas) is on January 6th!
Could it be altered to allow us to keep it until the 6th?? Please????
December 2nd, 2010 at 8:42 am
Done and (dare I say it?) dusted. Ahem, excuse the pun.
December 2nd, 2010 at 8:45 am
Living in a place where never snows, I expect it greatly.
December 2nd, 2010 at 9:03 am
Snow!
December 2nd, 2010 at 9:14 am
Please remember that for one half of the world Christmas time is the middle of summer. So we enjoy warm and sunny Christmas, and I for one wouldn’t change that. So for those of us in the southern hemisphere, why not a sun image instead of snow.
December 2nd, 2010 at 9:17 am
The snow definitely cheered me up. It never snows where I live so it’s nice to have snow here in my virtual place.
December 2nd, 2010 at 9:24 am
The snow is such a great touch. Right in the spirit of the holiday season.
December 2nd, 2010 at 9:26 am
Is it possible to activate that song on your own blog?
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:49 pm
Sure, use this URL with the audio player: http://wpcom.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/05-david-caceres-let-it-snow.mp3
December 2nd, 2010 at 9:32 am
I admit it is neat but being a complete Grinch I won’t be using it again this year. How about some falling Cthulhus at Halloween. Now that WOULD be cool!
December 2nd, 2010 at 10:05 am
I cannot activate the function, because I use an own-hosted WordPress Blog… BUT: i managed to install the “Let It Snow!” plugin, made by Aen Tan.
Those who also have the blog hosted somewhere else can either search for the plugin through the Plugins sections or click this link: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/let-it-snow/
December 2nd, 2010 at 10:08 am
Oh, I love it so much.
December 2nd, 2010 at 10:27 am
Also, this plugin, Snowstorm, seems to be more laggy than “Let it snow!”
December 2nd, 2010 at 10:30 am
WordPress mail for all users:
“Here’s a latin jazz version of Let it Snow to listen to while activating the feature:”
But where is the link?
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:46 pm
Click the play button on the audio player. You need to have Flash to use it though.
December 2nd, 2010 at 10:33 am
Shame it hasn’t snowed in my neck of the woods.
December 2nd, 2010 at 10:33 am
It so baking hot here I just cant turn the snow on on my site however it is fun seeing it everywhere else
December 2nd, 2010 at 11:20 am
Love it, however, I live in Queensland Australia where it is very hot at this time of the year.
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:45 pm
Can we come visit?
December 2nd, 2010 at 12:26 pm
What a treat to publish our blog update to find that it was not only snowing outside but inside as well!
Love it more inside:) Thanks! Great feature!
Happy Holidays!
December 2nd, 2010 at 12:27 pm
This is so cute!
December 2nd, 2010 at 12:34 pm
Thanks for the snow, and the music as well (:
December 2nd, 2010 at 12:37 pm
Thanks for making it snow on Guam! Being away from the cool traditional winter weather has been a bit of a dampener, but having virtual snow makes it that make more Christmasy!
December 2nd, 2010 at 12:44 pm
Luverly Juberly. Can you make the snow settle at the bottom of the screen as well?
Off to take a festive photo for the background.
December 2nd, 2010 at 3:44 pm
We’ve tried that before, but it can really slow down the browser so we turn it off.
December 2nd, 2010 at 12:45 pm
Let it snooooooooow
sweet, immediately updated on my blog.
December 2nd, 2010 at 12:55 pm

December 2nd, 2010 at 1:34 pm
I really love this feature!
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:46 pm
Perfect cherry on top for my extreme gift wrap topic. YAYYY
Nick = Hero
PS: I like the little guy shoveling snow idea posted by Linda.
December 2nd, 2010 at 1:51 pm
Dope idea…I think I’ll try it out.
December 2nd, 2010 at 2:06 pm

December 2nd, 2010 at 4:05 pm

Thank you, Nick. I so enjoy snow, but rarely see it the South. I’m so glad I can see it on my WP blog.
December 2nd, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Yay! The snow is back! Living in LA, this is the only snow I experience. lol Thanks WP!
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:18 pm
I turned “snow on” last year and was so sad when it ended…but did not know it would magically re-appear until the other day!
MADE MY DECEMBER!
Thanks for the treat!
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:33 pm
Yippeee! I love the snow feature!
God Bless You and Merry Christmas!
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:42 pm
Interesting feature. I see snow all around me at present so I might leave the blog free of it for the time being.
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:54 pm
Thank You! Great snow.
December 2nd, 2010 at 6:59 pm
Whooow… what a pleasant feature! Thank you!
December 2nd, 2010 at 7:28 pm
There’s no Extra’s on the Dashboard.
December 3rd, 2010 at 2:02 am
It’s under Appearance on a WordPress.com site.
December 2nd, 2010 at 7:49 pm
Let it snow…let it snow…let it snow.
December 2nd, 2010 at 8:17 pm
When I navigate to Appearance their is no ‘Extras’ listed. I have my word press blog hosted through GoDaddy. Does that make a difference?
December 3rd, 2010 at 2:01 am
Yes, this is a WordPress.com feature. See some of the other comments where users have mentioned a plugin you can use for self-hosted WordPress sites.
December 2nd, 2010 at 9:19 pm
In the spring you should have it rain flowers or in the fall rain leaves. I couldn’t think of anything to fall in the summer except heat. LOL
December 2nd, 2010 at 9:25 pm
Love it every year, thanks !
December 2nd, 2010 at 10:25 pm
Thanks, we do not get snow in this part of the world but its great to have a ‘feel’ a ‘sense’ of it.
Great, you all have a great day ahead – Every day!! Cheers
December 2nd, 2010 at 11:33 pm
Pretty awesome, I’ve already added it.
December 2nd, 2010 at 11:33 pm

December 3rd, 2010 at 12:50 am
Hehe, so cute. I don’t think I’ll use it since I live in Florida, but I do love seeing it when I go to other blogs!!
December 3rd, 2010 at 1:27 am
I love this feature! It’s perfect for December…. although my front page has a post about Miami Beach, so it’s kinda weird seeing snow there!
December 3rd, 2010 at 1:45 am
Thank you! I love it
December 3rd, 2010 at 1:52 am
This is really nice. It adds an extra touch.
December 3rd, 2010 at 1:53 am
When I saw this on someone’s avatar, I thought the flickers were eye floaters.
December 3rd, 2010 at 4:02 am
Living in AZ, this is the first and only snow of the winter…. Thanks for the snow day, WP!
….now if only I could figure out how to get school cancelled because of it….
December 3rd, 2010 at 4:03 am
What’s the artist who created jazz instrumental version of Let it snow? I wish if it was activated with the snow feature.
December 6th, 2010 at 4:53 pm
David Caceres
December 3rd, 2010 at 4:42 am
Thank You so much. I love it! I love it!

December 3rd, 2010 at 7:39 am
Is there the chance to activate the music – latin jazz of Let it snow – on the blog?
December 4th, 2010 at 12:28 am

December 3rd, 2010 at 12:32 pm
Waiting for the real snow!
December 3rd, 2010 at 1:43 pm
Snow makes London grind to a halt, despite the fact its never that cold here (northerners you know what I’m talking about) and our public transport still runs (it’s like sweaty summer heat on the underground!) Nice feature though, merry December! x
December 3rd, 2010 at 1:43 pm
That’s so cool. Thank you Santa WordPress.
December 3rd, 2010 at 2:21 pm
I love the snow falling on my page…..for it adds unique flare to it!!!!!!
