New Theme: Toolbox
“Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need roads.”
—Dr. Emmett Brown
The streets of the future probably won’t be filled with flying cars and hover boards but the Web will be filled with more semantic content thanks to new markup elements introduced in HTML5. Today’s new theme will let you take advantage of that future right now, right here, on WordPress.com. It’s called Toolbox.
Much like the Sandbox theme, Toolbox provides all the markup you need to build your very own theme with CSS alone–with one difference. Toolbox uses some really exciting new HTML5 elements–like <article>, <header>, and <nav>–that better describe what your content is all about.
What can you do with it? Anything you want.
Since HTML and CSS go together like peanut butter and jelly we’ve put together a small demonstration. Clicking the image below will take you to a demo site where you can see—and download!—some really cool Custom CSS working in concert with the Toolbox markup.
If you need some more inspiration, take a look at a small sample of the infinite themes styles available with Custom CSS. All you need to get started is the Custom CSS upgrade and some experience with CSS.
If you’re building a WordPress theme for a self-hosted site, you can use Toolbox too! It’s available right now in the WordPress Themes Directory.

Great. I like it to see, that you are on the cutting edge. Thanks for your effort. (BTW I guess I will be finally happy if you decide to include “The Erudite” into the rich portfolio of WordPress.com themes.

This is mind boggling — to say the least….. Now where do I get the time to learn all this stuff? …
… Can oldies, but goldies, learn all this CSS?…

Absolutely.
We have some great suggestions for learning CSS and getting started with Custom CSS in our forums.

I would really like to know where our hover-cars are! They’d be pretty useful on my commute.
Great new theme!
Dec 10th at 5:54 pm

Looks like some study is required – I like the flexibility though.
Dec 10th at 8:54 pm
It’s cool. Gonna try it later.
Dec 10th at 9:07 pm
Well done. Great addition.
Dec 10th at 9:11 pm

Dec 10th at 11:29 pm
I love my CSS upgrade, but I’m not ready to create a blog from scratch. I’m sure this new theme will be perfect for the techies in the crowd. Thanks Theme Team for the regular flow of new themes. I’m always tempted by I’m pretty hung up on Inuit Types + CSS upgrade.
Dec 10th at 11:44 pm
I think the streets of the future WILL be filled with flying cars and hover boards!
Dec 11th at 12:15 am

Dec 11th at 3:28 am
Cool, but I’ll stick to my current theme
Dec 11th at 4:19 am
Nice theme. Simple and clear.
Dec 11th at 6:08 am
I love WordPress and all the different cool stuff it keeps offering. Keep the good work going guys. Nice theme.
Dec 11th at 11:29 am
Could I use it without the css upgrade? And if i use it , the theme will be only in white like the sandbox theme?
Dec 11th at 3:41 pm
That’s correct. The Custom CSS upgrade is a paid upgrade but the Toolbox theme is free. Like Sandbox, Toolbox will be a plain white theme without Custom CSS.
Dec 11th at 12:13 pm
Woooow…. great! I like it.
Dec 11th at 2:33 pm
