New Theme: Vertigo
Today we are excited to introduce a new, beautifully designed, free theme called Vertigo. It makes great use of WordPress post formats. It has a charming, hitchcockian typeface for site and post titles. And it’s dark.
With Vertigo you can set your own accent color for links, which is used in several places throughout the theme, if you don’t feel like red is a good fit for your blog. You can also have a second color of your choice for the site title by using the settings in Appearance → Header.
The theme is inspired by the design work of the late Saul Bass, Art Goodman, and Dave Nagata. Based on the original design by Matthew Buchanan. We hope you like this new theme and start creating incredible blogs with it. As usual, go exploring on the theme showcase.

I love this theme..It is very very nice
May 10th, 2011 at 3:40 pm
I used this as my theme for tumblr before. XD
May 10th, 2011 at 4:12 pm
I wish there was less chat-oriented themes.
May 10th, 2011 at 4:29 pm
If I weren’t for the fact that I just switched to Mystique and love it, I’d be all over this. But can you make it so that when I link to a post like this on Facebook, it shows a thumbnail? For some reason, there’s no art, and that’s half the battle.
May 10th, 2011 at 4:34 pm
This theme is on Tumblr, too! I had it on my Tumblr for a little while, liked it a lot, but due to my extreme unsatisfaction, I changed my theme to something different.
May 10th, 2011 at 4:44 pm
I like it.
May 10th, 2011 at 4:57 pm
Pretty good, but i’ve fallen in love with Mystique one…
May 10th, 2011 at 4:59 pm
Outstanding concept.
May 10th, 2011 at 5:00 pm
I am always recommending my friends to WordPress for this very reason – innovative, fresh design and it’s all so easy to learn how to use. Thank you for giving us another great theme!
May 10th, 2011 at 5:04 pm
Using it already!
May 10th, 2011 at 5:05 pm
I like the design.
May 10th, 2011 at 6:08 pm
Brilliant theme – BUT, it can’t handle important letters like å, ä, ö, á etc. Fix this and I will change theme immediately!
May 10th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Finally, a black one.
However, there is a bug: several letters are missing from the main font-set of this theme, for example ö, ő, ü, ű, ú, á, é, í, ó, so only those writing in English might be able to use it. I’ve never seen this problem with any other themes, so I hope designers can do something about it as it’s quite limiting, obviously.
May 10th, 2011 at 7:18 pm
Kinda cool.. I guess.
May 10th, 2011 at 7:46 pm
THIS is Brilliant
Well done WP
MASHALLAH you guys are growing fast.
Keep those free themes coming!
May 10th, 2011 at 9:34 pm
Can we add Twitter, Facebook or Youtube icons with this theme ? for example in the menus
Thanks for answering
May 17th, 2011 at 1:43 pm
You can add Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube icons on posts and pages with the sharing tool: http://en.support.wordpress.com/sharing/
May 10th, 2011 at 10:57 pm
Hitchcockian and cool.. but dark! (Hitchcockian?! That’s a new term!
)
May 10th, 2011 at 11:25 pm
Red, black and white — awesome colors… will bookmark this one.
May 11th, 2011 at 12:04 am
Isn’t this theme a tumblr kind of theme?
May 11th, 2011 at 12:21 am
It’s really cool!
May 11th, 2011 at 12:50 am
Really funny and quirky-looking. Great job!
May 11th, 2011 at 12:52 am
I use this theme for my blog, so i can make the reader focus to read my article.
May 11th, 2011 at 1:04 am
So, my Tumblr and WordPress blogs can have the same theme? Ah, brilliant!
May 11th, 2011 at 3:19 am
Wew… Looks good…. nice
May 11th, 2011 at 3:27 am
Most beautiful
!
May 11th, 2011 at 6:08 am
Look good, especially for dark theme. But I think its too dark.
May 11th, 2011 at 9:52 am
This is super cool.
May 11th, 2011 at 1:02 pm
Now, I like this one… like the dark ones!
May 11th, 2011 at 1:12 pm
Its very black… good..
May 11th, 2011 at 2:15 pm
Clean. Looks good.
May 11th, 2011 at 3:12 pm
Not too bad.
May 11th, 2011 at 3:24 pm
Ok, if you guys would add some features like a sidebar and widgets and make Vertigo a premium theme I would definitely buy it. I love the look and feel I just can’t use it as is.
May 11th, 2011 at 3:44 pm
Vertigo has two widget areas near the footer. They only appear if you drag widgets to them.
May 11th, 2011 at 4:51 pm
There’s no implemented Polish fonts.
May 11th, 2011 at 5:19 pm
I really love this theme. It is very cool theme. I mean it’s COOL
May 11th, 2011 at 5:19 pm
Love it; would suggest making it available in various layouts and colors though. Great job!
May 11th, 2011 at 5:47 pm
Cool theme, I like it.
May 12th, 2011 at 12:57 am
Love it!
May 12th, 2011 at 1:40 am
Eh, it’s cool.
May 12th, 2011 at 3:19 am
Certainly a good theme for Hitchcock fans.
May 12th, 2011 at 3:51 am
I am very tempted to change my layout to Vertigo. I love the wonky typeface, and general quirkiness of it. And the dark colours.
May 12th, 2011 at 4:10 am
Omg this IS my tumblr theme XD I love it. Really cool!!
May 12th, 2011 at 6:04 am
Waww, cool… Like it…

May 12th, 2011 at 8:24 am
Hey, cool theme.
But, I’m still on my theme.
May 12th, 2011 at 10:13 am
I like it!
May 12th, 2011 at 11:16 am
This intensity of darkness is good for a blog monster!
May 12th, 2011 at 1:42 pm
Makes me wish I could write as darkly as this theme, but alas, my blog is mostly about Moving to Carlsbad, CA (where it’s usually sunny) and parenting. But, if I could spout dark stuff, I’d love to use this theme. I like its simplicity; it’s a work of art.
May 12th, 2011 at 1:58 pm
Very cool!!
May 12th, 2011 at 2:40 pm
It looks good
May 12th, 2011 at 3:52 pm
A great theme after a long time!
May 12th, 2011 at 4:17 pm
Very nice. It’s really cool!
May 12th, 2011 at 4:33 pm
I like this design, but this font doesn’t support Vietnamese characters
May 12th, 2011 at 5:33 pm
I cannot believe someone would actually frame their original and worthy posts with this, or anything “grungy.” Our blog content not only tells much about us; but the designs we use or create are instant acceptance or rejection before we even get our material; out of the gate, so to speak.
Content is everything. Originality counts. Just my humble opinion.
May 12th, 2011 at 7:08 pm
Great theme might give it a try.
May 12th, 2011 at 8:02 pm
Good but still looking for a better free photoblog theme.
May 12th, 2011 at 9:22 pm
Don’t like that all the pages are at the bottom
I like themes that make the page text SMALL or I can’t have lots of pages
May 12th, 2011 at 10:13 pm
Excellent job, my brother loves this theme! I am so happy about all these new themes coming out lately, I check for new ones almost daily. I just wish the Linen theme had been free, haha!
May 12th, 2011 at 10:15 pm
That is a thing of beauty!
May 13th, 2011 at 3:29 am
Nice. Nice.
May 13th, 2011 at 6:40 am
Tumblr theme for WordPress…Hmmm. Not bad.
)
May 13th, 2011 at 6:58 am
It somehow reminds me of Emily the Strange
May 13th, 2011 at 8:19 am
Awesome… WordPress is the best.
May 13th, 2011 at 12:42 pm
it’s black sweet WordPress template.
May 13th, 2011 at 1:04 pm
Post titles are unable to display Japanese characters in this theme. I’m seeing that cute CD-ROM icon instead…
May 13th, 2011 at 1:07 pm
I’m sorry but this is very ugly ;/
May 13th, 2011 at 3:26 pm
Looks simple and cool. Very nice theme
May 13th, 2011 at 3:31 pm
Very nice! Thanks
May 13th, 2011 at 4:51 pm
“Hello, Hello (hola)! I’ve got a theme called Vertigo!” Genuine U2 lyrics.
May 13th, 2011 at 5:07 pm
Nice template, I like it …
May 13th, 2011 at 5:13 pm
Love the look of the theme and have already switched one of my blogs to it, but the lack of certain punctuation marks in the header font is very frustrating. The lack of apostrophes and quotation marks is particularly galling, and record players and guns are not proper substitutes for parentheses. I hope the font will be updated to rectify these omissions. Cool look, but don’t neglect functionality.
May 13th, 2011 at 5:45 pm
I like this theme… lol
May 13th, 2011 at 8:24 pm
unique n_n
May 13th, 2011 at 9:39 pm
Very Good!
May 13th, 2011 at 10:55 pm
Why is it that my header is simply not displayed with this theme? O_o It’s pretty, by the way ;p
May 14th, 2011 at 10:19 am
I love it….
May 14th, 2011 at 11:54 am
i’ve always been fascinated with new themes…. i’ll check this one out and we’ll see….
May 14th, 2011 at 4:35 pm
Looks good!
May 15th, 2011 at 9:37 am
Really I like the theme.
May 15th, 2011 at 11:14 am
Cool! I like it!
May 15th, 2011 at 4:04 pm
“Charming” is not the first word I was thinking of when I saw the typeface for links and post titles.
The vid linked at the demo site is cool though. And I guess it matches the “Hitchcockian” typeface.
May 15th, 2011 at 5:57 pm
Has potential – like the colors. Very dark though – I think we are getting away from all this dark stuff and trending toward “environmental” colors like yellows, greens and blues. Sounds kitschy but if done right, there are a lot of possibilities. This website design – too symmetrical, too amateur for my liking.
May 16th, 2011 at 7:02 am
I think I can let it without giving a try.
May 16th, 2011 at 8:23 am
Why is not free?
May 16th, 2011 at 9:38 am
It’s free.
May 16th, 2011 at 12:26 pm
Nice theme but you should think there are many languages other than English.
It doesn’t support the accents over: à á è é í ò ó ö â and letters disappear.
May 17th, 2011 at 2:21 pm
Unfortunately, the font used doesn’t support certain characters yet. We’ll keep you updated if the font updates with a complete set.
May 16th, 2011 at 2:32 pm
I didn’t like the “flower” bullet..
May 16th, 2011 at 5:08 pm
That’s cute! =)
May 16th, 2011 at 5:26 pm
I would happily use this theme, but Romanian language has several diacritical marks that do not appear in Vertigo.
May 17th, 2011 at 2:22 pm

This post comes in so handy and timing perfect thank you.
This morning I received constructive criticism. For a Monday morning this was too hectic.
I requested someone that I truly admire to read my blog and comment. By just looking at the blog, she commented that there is no colour, or nothing exciting to it that would attract anyone, all it is is writing. It came as a surprise as my purpose of a blog is to write, share and make a difference, could not understand how colour and features will make a difference.
May 16th, 2011 at 8:43 pm
I absolutely LOVE this. Vertigo is one of my favorites! Love Hitchcock. Really needs to be 3 column though…or at least 2 column. I don’t like footer widgets.
May 17th, 2011 at 12:30 am
It is free?…..great…
May 17th, 2011 at 2:14 pm
Yes, its available on your WordPress.com Dashboard under Appearance -> Themes
May 17th, 2011 at 1:54 am
Not too sure about this one. It’s a little too dark for “Deb’s Sunny Place”. This one is not too appealing to someone looking for inspiration. Give me lighter, brighter, fun and efficient themes! Thanks for posting! Sunny
May 17th, 2011 at 3:01 am
I’m dizzy over Vertigo. Is that why you chose the name? Make us all dizzy with excitement?
May 17th, 2011 at 5:08 am
The design and font style is fantastic! However, what about black text on white background as an option?
To read white text on black background is uncomfortable for the eyes, even when the design looks very nice, like her.
May 17th, 2011 at 2:08 pm
Holy cow, that looks awesome. I LOVE that font.
May 17th, 2011 at 5:46 pm
I love this theme! It’s funky enough to make sense with my senseless teenage rants, without seeming kiddy, and stuff. Plus, I always write longer posts when i have a one column theme, so thanks for that!
May 18th, 2011 at 12:06 am
Loving the simplistic almost retro feel!
May 18th, 2011 at 2:24 am
The red really gives me a vertigo
May 18th, 2011 at 8:13 am
I love that the first thing I thought of when I saw it was ‘whoa, did I accidentally go to Tumblr instead of WordPress?’, only to read the comments and see several Tumblr references.
I love WP for everything that makes it DIFFERENT from Tumblr. Please keep it that way.
May 18th, 2011 at 12:50 pm
Another creative design…
May 18th, 2011 at 3:24 pm
Very cute font.
