Celebrate Poetry, All Month Long

April is National Poetry Writing Month! To participate in NaPoWriMo 2014, write a poem each day this month. Read on for details.

NaPoWriMo, or National Poetry Writing Month, is back!

NaPoWriMo is an annual project in which participants write a poem each day in April. It unfolds in the tradition of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, held in November) and motivates, inspires, and engages poets of all levels, genres, and backgrounds.

While a poem a day is your ultimate goal, there’s really no “right” way to participate. Start today and keep at it, and experiment as you see fit. Focus entirely on sonnets, or experiment with free verse. Participate on your own, or collaborate with others. Publish on your blog, or experiment offline.

Ideas to get started

  • Publish poems each day, focusing on a different genre each week.
  • Handwrite poems in a journal, for your eyes only.
  • Start a collective with others, plan themes for April, and publish poems on your own blogs focused on these themes.
  • Create a new blog or group site specifically for this monthly challenge.
  • Download the WordPress app for your iOS, Android, or BlackBerry device if you don’t already have one, and publish on-the-go haiku poems daily, inspired by your location.

For daily inspiration

Like last year, NaPoWriMo founder Maureen Thorson will post daily prompts on the NaPoWriMo site through the month, so head there for inspiration. You can also use our prompts at The Daily Post for a jump start each morning, and respond to each with a poem.

If you’re sharing poems online, submit your site to the NaPoWriMo showcase, so we and other participants can find you. Tag your posts with NaPoWriMo so WordPress.com users can sift through your poems in the Reader, too.

Good luck to all participants! We look forward to reading your poems this month.

I’d think quality would suffer if you write one EACH day! How about 2 each week! You can find TEN tips for Writing Poetry on my blog. :-)

Argh! Wish I saw this before I started the A to Z April challenge. Doing both would be too much. Unless I combine them…Let me ponder on this.

Well I don’t usually write poetry but it just so happens I published one today. I thought I would submit to poetry month but then I saw 30/30 days – eewwwweee -don’t think I’ll be able to do that – but if you want to check out a poem by a non-poet then i’m your gal. Can’t wait to read all the collection you’ll be amassing. Maybe one day i’ll do more, or maybe not.

Lovely idea but much too complicated for poets. Why not just send by email??!!!

You can certainly email your poems, or send email notifications of your poetry posts to your blog followers, if you choose to do so. What’s fun about NaPoWriMo is being part of a bigger network and seeing what everyone else is publishing each day. The ideas listed in the post are simply that — ideas.

Some people receive too much email each day; by submitting your site to the NaPoWriMo showcase, or tagging your poetry posts with “NaPoWriMo,” you’re allowing others to find you.

I’m so glad to find out that this dedication to poetry is happening. What an awesome idea! I submitted a poem this morning but forgot to tag it with NaPoWriMo. I went back and tried to add the tag in “edit” mode. Then I reblogged it. Hopeully it will be found easily if I what I did worked. I plan to submit everyday and will remember to tag all of my poems going forward. Any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I created a wordpress blog just for NaPoWriMo! can’t wait to see if I truly will be able to come up with thirty poems in as many days. loving wordpress so far. being pressed for time does wonders for self-censorship.
