Lá Fhéile Pádraig Shona Duit! And, if you don’t speak Irish, Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! March 17th is a public holiday in Ireland, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Montserrat that commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Today, we’re showcasing Irish blogs and bloggers as a way to join in the fun.
No celebration is complete without food
If we’re celebrating, we’ve got to have good food. Foodies will enjoy One Man’s Meat, where Irish blogger Conor Bofin shares his carefully photographed recipes, well-seasoned with humor. We especially enjoyed his recipe for an English classic, toad in the hole, and this amazing hot smoked duck with orange marmalade.

Ireland in photos
Kildare-based photographer Edward Mooney showcases his work over at EdMooneyPhotography. His photo essay on Donadea Castle captures the beautiful ruins in black and white.
Old Photos of Cork is a gorgeous collection of historical photos taken in and around Cork, curated by our own Donncha Ó Caoimh, an Automattician living in Blarney, County Cork, Ireland. We especially loved this photograph — perhaps the last known photo of the RMS Titanic — seen here leaving Cork Harbour.

We loved the self-deprecation in the tagline of author Robert O’Byrne‘s site The Irish Aesthete: “This is not an oxymoron.” Lose yourself (as we did!) in his collection of Irish history and architecture.
Looking for a bit more Irish inspiration? Coders will enjoy County Mayo-based Eoin Gallagher‘s Magp.ie, a shiny collection of PHP and JavaScript code discoveries — complete with sample code, of course. Music lovers will get a get a kick out of 7 billion people all alive at once, a site dedicated to Irish musical artists. I’m glad that St. Patrick’s Day gives Irish bloggers and Irish culture (and Ireland in general) a chance to come into the spotlight for a while. After visiting Europe I feel like Ireland is one of the most underrated countries of the continent, and it’s nice to see so many people celebrating and appreciating Ireland like I do!

I’m not Irish but I do believe the Irish played an essential role in saving Western civilization (make that humanity). I am Catholic and hope that gets me part way to being somewhat Irish. Besides, I love orange marmalade and duck, but I’ve only enjoyed them separately. Leave it to the genius of the Irish to combine them both in one dish.

This is great!! I liked reading through all of these and found some new ones to follow. I had a post where my three children wrote St. Patrick’s Day short stories and then another about our fun-filled day and some book and movie suggestions. 🙂
